The version of the reverse side of the Great Seal shown in The Lost Symbol (above right) did not exist until 1935, so it is not proof as Dan Brown suggests "that the Masons held secret influence over our early nation."
In fact, there is no early drawing of the pyramid & eye that would spell M-A-S-O-N when overlaid with a star.
The first realization (illustration) of the reverse side of the Great Seal (above left) was engraved by James Trenchard and published in Philadelphia's Columbian Magazine in October 1786.
The first U.S. government version of the reverse side was the Great Seal Centennial Medal (above center)created in 1882.
Also, the original form of the Great Seal is a written description only. No artwork was submitted to nor approved by Congress when it adopted both sides of America's official emblem on June 20, 1782.
The designers of the Great Seal did however make one preliminary sketch of the pyramid & eye, the third committee's design (May 1782) whose Latin mottoes were not chosen for the final Seal:
When a six-pointed star is
drawn upon this version,
a conspiracy is revealed
that is older and more insidious
than any fraternal fantasy.
